When trying to find a role model, there was one person who I immediately thought would be an interesting person to talk to. Elayna Burdelski is a junior at Chatham University with a major in Accounting who is pursuing her Master’s Degree through the IDP program in only 5 years. She is an active student around campus, the Accounting Club President, where she is trying to grow the activity of the group more than it has in previous years. She has an interest in the tax field, where she has been interviewing for her second internship all week around Pittsburgh. This is something that she valued greatly because she knows that a strong internship is the key to a good job in the future.
The pieces of advice that Elayna felt were most important to her success were making study guides before a big exam and solving extra textbook problems. Both of these activities require further thinking on the topics that need to be known, which is why it is beneficial when it is actually the time to take the test. Extra textbook problems for Elayna helped especially for her accounting classes with Dr. Pierson, as she joked that his tests tend to be very hard. With the major that we are both in, mastering the application side of exams are crucial for her success both in college and her professional career. Overall, she said that preparing accordingly for whatever assignment is upcoming is the most important skill in managing a college workload.
Elayna is on her way to completing a flourishing resume upon her Master’s program and her second internship this summer. She told me for now to worry about joining clubs and going to events held around campus. These are the little details to do now that will fill up a resume down the line, and small things like this can make things easier when internships and other things get tough. The Vita program was something that I have never heard of, but will do some research about what it is and decide if I would be interested in taking part of it. The last advice she gave me was that being able to walk up to someone and introduce yourself is a very important skill to be able to do.
When comparing Elayna to what is described through the student spotlight of Maura Rapkin, I can relate a lot of qualities between the two people. What is so clear to me is that successful people have the self-determination to do work on their own. This can be related to organization skills of an entrepreneur because in a way every student is just trying to make their own path to sell their self to the best position that they desire. Every person has goals, and the people who are driven are willing to do the little things like keep their life organized on a personal level. I think both students will end up being very happy, and was pleased to have been able to sit 1:1 with Elayna.
