On Tuesday, September 25th, I attended Chatham’s Business and Entrepreneurship Club Accounting and Information Systems Networking Mixer. The event began with roughly an hour of discussion between professionals invited to attend the event and students here at Chatham. I talked with a number of people who already work in the business world as well as presidents of clubs around campus. This part of the event was followed by a two-hour panel discussion, hosted by Dr. Chung. The panel consisted of three leaders in the areas of robotic accounting initiatives, including the use of artificial intelligence. Tom Bartos, the CFO of Cognistx, is an expert in artificial intelligence with various types of business applications. Jim Marino, technology manager at PNC Bank and adjunct professor at Chatham, discussed the implementing of robotics in accounting and how PNC Bank has used MIS within its company. Dan Desko, team leader in auditing and risk management at Schneider Downs, provided information about his career including internal auditing and security consulting services. These three answered questioned posed by both Dr. Chung, as well as those in the audience looking for more information and advice. The event was very informational, as listening to distinguished business professionals only helps my own understanding of the industry.
I had many takeaways from the event, primarily coming from the future of automation around the world. Dan Desko had a wide understanding of the auditing field, and has slowly been adapting to new technologies within the company. He says that automation is coming for all businesses within the next 10-15 years, and tells why all young business people should have programming skills. This relates to information systems and operations in the textbook because we have discussed during class about how using these skills and applying them to your own business might be necessary in the future. It was very interesting to see three men who were all early adapters to these technological processes. A single business normally requires at least a few other business’s help in order to operate, and how well you are able to organize and operate with each other can ultimately create consistency and possibly save money. Overall, Dan Desko related his auditing background to information systems and operations by comparing his career to business operations.
The panel discussion relates to the future of technology within the retail and consumer markets. Companies like Amazon have implemented many new innovative ideas, like delivery drones and automated robotics within the manufacturing plants. Similarly to how all three panelists discussed how they have adapted to using these technologies in the workplace, Amazon and its consumers are also going through the transition right now. This is something that will always take time, as people become comfortable using the latest form of technology after they get used to it. Just like how people didn’t initially think that everyone didn’t need a phone or computer, the three panelists told us why they think everyone is going to need to be able to program in order to have a good chance at moving up an organization’s ladder. After going to this event, it seems like what these men discussed is the hottest topic in business right now.
On November 30th, Marriot International Hotel reported that their database had been hacked, taking either the names, addresses, dates of birth, or passport numbers of roughly 327 million guests of the hotel. There was also a potential possibility that these hackers got a hold of credit card numbers, and despite Marriot keeping this data encrypted, the decryption could have also been taken to use. This is a huge problem for the company, and is something that Dan Desko has most likely dealt with a number of times. Security breaches happen very often, so much so that the article states that “data breaches have become so common that even biggish ones no longer make the news” (“Mariott…Victim,” 2018). This is one of the biggest hacks ever, only behind Yahoo’s breach in 2013 where 3 billion users were vulnerable to losing their information. Accordingly dealing with security breaches is something that these panelists have all dealt with, and is only becoming more common as people become more skilled using programming tools.
